Mankato Liberty member Dave Kruse has organized a GOP Candidates Meet-and-Greet at the WOW! Zone in Mankato on Thursday, January 28, from 6 – 7 p.m. Each candidate (gubernatorial, congressional, auditor, state legislature, etc.) will have time to introduce themselves, talk about their campaigns, and visit with individuals. (Note: No endorsement of any candidate or party is made or implied.)
Don’t miss your local caucus! It will be held Tuesday, February 2, at 7 p.m. To save time on caucus night, look up your precinct now, write it down, and bring it with you to your caucus location (varies by party and your street address). The caucus will run 1-2 hours.
Caucus attendees participate in a candidate straw poll, elect delegates to the county convention, and may propose changes to the party platform. If you wish to participate in the endorsement of candidates or vote on changes to the platform, party constitution, or elect party officers, you will need to become a delegate. Delegates serve a two-year term. You can learn more about the caucus process at the Secretary of State’s 2010 Caucus page.
Mankato Liberty and YAL-MSU will meet at MSU in Centennial Student Union room 238 (Nickerson Room), 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. Agenda items include:
- Choose new leadership for YAL-MSU and recruit a new staff coordinator (Mark Johnson has moved away).
- Discuss possible recruitment activities and other events
- Speeches by a gubernatorial candidate (Tom Emmer) and two Minnesota Legislature candidates (William Paulsen and Dave Kruse). Candidate speeches and Q&A will begin at about 5:50 if you’re only interested in that portion of the meeting.
- Book swap: If you have political books or other materials you’d like to share, bring them along.
Motorhome Diaries is visiting Mankato from 7 – 10 pm at The Hub (University Square at Warren and Stadium). Motorhome Diaries travels the U.S. talking with libertyphiles about promoting a return to voluntary, non-authoritarian society. This is an informal event; you do not need to come for the whole time. They will share a bit about what MHD is about, learn what’s going on in the area in terms of advancing the freedom movement and hopefully create some synergy and share ideas.
As some of you are aware, my recent letter to the editor on health care in response to J. Scott Urban was published on September 11. Both letters were published on campaignforliberty.com: Health care is unequivocally not a right. Urban’s reply is published in today’s Free Press here. Please read it and send in your own letters to the editor; we need to show strong support for constitutionally-permissible market-based health care reforms and strong opposition to further government expansion into our lives and livelihoods.

The national and state economic climate is having a profound impact on city government. The 2010 preliminary budget recognizes these economic pressures by taking responsible steps to reduce spending and adjust revenue streams so we do not place undue hardship on local taxpayers. The budget offers organizational changes to build future service capacity while meting and exceeding demands for services as the local economy gradually recovers in the future. Learn more. See comparables. An online survey is coming soon. What is “your take” about Mankato’s preliminary 2010 budget?
